Volunteers in Service to America

The Houston Adult Literacy Project is a collaboration with multiple non-profits in the Greater Houston Area to build capacity of adult education and literacy organizations. Our goal is to support low-income, low-literacy adult learners to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life.

What is AmeriCorps VISTA?

Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), has been at the forefront of fighting poverty in America for over 50 years. Founded in 1965, AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents, and passion of more than 7,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to end the cycle of poverty.

Today, over 46 million Americans live in poverty. Through AmeriCorps VISTA, members can make a tangible difference and they will find the fulfillment that comes from using their knowledge and skills to help those in disadvantaged circumstances turn their dreams into reality.

For more information, contact us at AmeriCorps@TheAllianceTX.org.

The Houston Adult Literacy VISTA project is designed to support and build capacity to provide opportunities to low-income individuals to obtain education, workforce training, and skills that will meet the needs of employers and lead to increased employment opportunities.

VISTA Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at one of The Alliance’s service partner organizations. Members focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of their organization.

With passion, commitment, and hard work, members will create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.  VISTA members have the potential to engage in capacity-building projects under guided supervision by agency staff and various nonprofit Directors.

Projects may include, but are not limited to:

    • Working alongside agency staff to implement development campaigns
    • Developing and implementing training materials and curriculum for volunteer orientations, use of database technology, and/or site-based procedures
    • Coordinating and executing mentorship programs
    • Grant writing and funding research
    • Coordinating, recruiting, and managing volunteers

By serving with AmeriCorps, members will gain new skills, develop new friendships, build professional networks, learn how to survive at a modest stipend – plus they will receive the satisfaction that comes from serving others.

(As of July 2, 2023)
