06 Feb College Access for Kijana Youth
Today most fast-growing jobs in the Houston area require at least an associate’s degree. That is why the Kijana Youth Program is partnering with the Houston-Galveston Area Council and Houston I.S.D. to expand our college readiness services for at-risk youth in upper grade levels.
For over seven years, the Kijana Youth Program (funded by the Texas Dept. of Family Protective Services through Harris County Protective Services for Children & Adults) has made certain that refugee and immigrant students in the Gulfton neighborhood have the tools they need to succeed both in school and in the world. Our team of bilingual youth counselors provide daily tutoring and enrichment activities during the school year and summer to over 250 students from low-income families.
Through our new partnerships, Alliance is taking this proven model to our partnering HISD high school campus. Program Manager Nnenna Amugo says, “I’m excited to see how this new collaboration will assist our refugee students and open a lot of doors for a brighter future”
With our team of dedicated counselors and mentors, Alliance will be there to help ensure a new generation is ready to succeed after graduation and become leaders in their communities.
