01 Nov Annual Halloween Party
On Friday October 28, Alliance for Multicultural Community Services hosted its annual Halloween party, which allows newly-arrived families to learn about and partake in the holiday. Many holidays in the United States are foreign to refugees, and our staff tries to teach new arrivals about American customs and traditions. Through the annual Halloween party Alliance helps refugees understand that the holiday is mainly celebrated just for fun, despite the macabre decorations and costumes often seen during October.
Refugee youth from Congo, Somalia, Iraq and Cuba gathered at Alliance for face painting, crafts and candy. Volunteers and staff taught over 50 children about safety on Halloween night, and took them for a practice round of trick-or-treating throughout the building. The kids left with lots of candy and smiles on their faces.
