AmeriCorps VISTAs Fighting Poverty in Houston

Houston’s Refugee AmeriCorps VISTAs are wholeheartedly devoted to helping the refugee community, but they haven’t stopped there. They’ve gone the extra mile to honor our country and serve ALL impoverished communities in Houston through volunteering their time to extra causes.

A few VISTA group service highlights:

  • Houston’s Refugee AmeriCorps VISTAs gathered together on September 11th to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the lives of others. The VISTAs saw this day as an opportunity to show gratitude to our local law enforcement by writing thank you notes and making posters to deliver to stations throughout Southwest Houston.
  • Alliance’s VISTA members collaborated with Houston Food Bank for the Share Your Holidays food drive, an event to provide huge holiday meals for underserved communities. Through this collaboration, Alliance was able to hand out 250 warm meals to their clients to enjoy during the holiday season!
  • On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, VISTAs decided to head to the Houston Food Bank to help prepare meals that would be handed out to children who would otherwise go hungry after school or on the weekends. Dr. King always spoke of the importance of serving others, so our VISTAs took this day to honor his values and commitment to community service.
